This sector provides a number of job opportunities for the job seekers and has two Boards namely Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC) and Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) and it notifies recruitment drives for gazetted and non-gazetted posts. RRC Board manage 17 zones. The board recruits staff through entrance exams and direct recruitment. Some vacancies come under the Railway Recruitment Board while the other on the Union Public Service Commission. There are 4 types of post categories in Indian Railways namely Group A, B, C & D. Group A and B is of Gazetted posts while Group C and D includes Non-Gazetted posts.
1. Group A:-
UPSC recruits probationers selected through Engineering Service Exam, Civil Service Exam and Combined Medical Service Examination. Moreover, it appoints officers by transfer or by the promotion of group B Officers also. It has 10 organised Railway services namely Traffic/ Accounts Service, Personnel Service, Railway Protection Force, Railway Medical Service etc. The minimum eligibility of this category is Graduation in any discipline, Degree in Engineering/ M.Sc or Degree in Medicine (MBBS).
There is no special examination conducted for selection of group B officers. It provides an opportunity to group C officers to get a direct promotion. These posts are not recruited directly. Railway Recruitment Board (RRB’s) make appointments to group B service posts.
Group C are further divided into technical & non-technical areas. RRB hire non technical staff through competitive exam. Non-Technical staff undertake duties like file management, ticket booking, collection and accounts work. Skilled labour consist of Clerical staff, Supervisor, Junior Engineer, Section Engineer which fall under technical cadre and one requires Diploma in Engineering/ B.Tech in relevant trade to work under this category. For non-technical positions like Station Master, Ticket Collector, Commercial Apprentice, Traffic Apprentice one needs minimum graduation or diploma/ ITI in Transport & Management, Transport Economics or relevant discipline.
Unskilled labour like Trackman, Helper, Gunmen, Store Keeper, Peon, Safaiwala fall under this category. For selection applicant must clear written test. The minimum qualification is 10th for group D posts.
Job opportunities are always tapping at the door with RRB who conducts various exams like RRB NTPC, ECRC, Railway Services Grades ,RRB TC and various other exams for Assistant Station Master, Assistant Loco Pilot, Section Engineers, Sports Person, Traffic Apprentice all year round.Besides these, Special Class Railway Apprenticeship Examination (SCRA) is also conducted for hiring mechanical engineers.
